New Silicon-based Research Converts Waste Heat into Energy

Harvesting Energy from the Human knee

What is energy harvesting? Energy harvesting, also known as energy scavenging, is the process of collecting small amounts of ambient energy from an outside source and repurposing it to power small electrical devices. Ambient energy is energy that is natural, non-electrical in nature, and is self-regenerating or renewable.

A Growing Thermoelectric Refrigeration Market

Human beings love refrigeration - the ability to store perishable food and medical products in a cold environment for long periods of time has made a huge impact on the progression of our species. Refrigeration technology has made great advances since its inception, but has arguably become stagnant since 2005 when census data showed that 99.5% of American households had a refrigerator. Sure, the devices are becoming more sleek and efficient, but the core technology for cooling has more or less remained the same: pumps and compressors. The latest in technological advances for refrigerators is cooing from thermoelectric coolers (TECs) - these devices do not require a standard compression pumps and are gaining traction to help us build a more energy efficient and eco-friendly world.

Next Gen Technology: Using the Human Body as a Generator

Our wearable devices and wearable technologies have become a part of our everyday lives. From bluetooth airpods to fitbits, wearable technology has become our norm and we don’t leave the house without it. We track our fitness health, read our email, and have it tell us the news as we walk from our cars to work. As innovative as these new wearable technologies are, they have the confines of a battery and we still have to take them off at night and plug them into a charger for tomorrow’s enjoyment. Have you ever considered that your body could become a power source for your favorite wearable devices? It would only be fitting that next generation technology utilizes next generation power.

Virtual Reality (VR) and its Impact on Space Exploration

NASA recently announced that they will be opening the International Space Station (ISS) for tourism and while this is exciting and lays the groundwork for space exploration and expansion in the future, this opportunity is not exactly available to all in its current state - it comes with a pretty steep price tag of $58 million ($35,000 per night). Sorry to say it, but more than likely no one reading this post will be visiting the ISS any time soon.

Thermoelectric Technologies in Oil, Gas, and Mining Industries

Until alternative sources of fuel are widely accepted and utilized in society, we will continue to rely on the mining, oil, and gas industries to produce and deliver our fuel supply. Shifting economic demands, environmental restrictions, and growth of commercial and residential developments have forced wells, plants, drilling operations, and refineries to be “off the grid” and located where there is no access to electrical power. In order to function normally and safely, they must maintain operations 24 hours a day and be completely self-reliant in terms of generating electricity - this means they need to use batteries and generators as their primary energy sources. Easy right? What about their declining energy efficiency because of waste heat?

Next Generation Technology: Generating Electricity from Space

A recent experiment done by researchers from Stanford University in California tries to expand on the viability of adapting solar panel technology to create electricity and energy from the night sky. This study has been documented by Science Alert and offers unique perspectives on identifying another potential source of renewable power. Essentially, researchers were making photodiodes contained in the solar panels “work backwards” in an attempt to generate power from a cold source.
